The film shows one small corner of a much bigger story: Australia's policy of holding people who arrive by boat in offshore detention, on islands far from the mainland.
The centre on Christmas Island
The detention centre sits hidden in the island's jungle. From late 2013 many people held there were moved on to Manus Island in Papua New Guinea or to Nauru, often with no word to the people who'd been working with them.
The centre closed in late 2018, a few months after the film premiered. It reopened in February 2019.
